Ethically Inclined

  •             I attended the panel at the media ethics conference called “Ethically Following the Story.” The topics focused on the differences in morality, the law, and ethics. Ethics is the rational decisions we make in the field based upon competing values. It is all about reasoning
  •             Mike, the sports editor, at The Oklahoman shared a story about the ethical decisions they made when covering the Sports Illustrated claims against Oklahoma State University. Mike said they first thing they did was find out what the SI story was missing. The job of a journalist is to give their readers the truth. Mike and his team worked to fill in the holes that SI left out, like history of the players they got quotes from.  I believe this was the strongest example of the session because it was very informative for the future reporters in the room.
  •             Other than the panel being short on time I did not find any weaknesses within the discussion. All the information provided was seemingly beneficial, and I am glad I was able to attend.
  •             Blogging is similar to journalism because you are sending a message to an audience. It depends on how you want your credibility as a writer to be portrayed through your blog. Are you going to write the truth? Or will you write fiction? In a simple way being ethically is easy. Think about your readers and their need to know.  Blogging is obviously more of a want to know kind of basis but we can still provide useful information through our blogs.
